The group of tourists had arrived in Vietnam on July 9 and was scheduled to return to India on Sunday morning. However, the tragedy struck on Saturday afternoon, around 1:30 PM local time. Witnesses stated that the boat had barely traveled 300 to 400 meters from the shore before it suddenly overturned, leaving the passengers with almost no time to react.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Disaster

Ashish Kumar, a mobile phone distributor from Guntur who was part of the trip, shared the harrowing details of the moments leading up to the capsize. He explained that the tourists were divided into different batches for the island excursions, while "We had all gone there as sellers, distributors, and employees of Lava Mobile. We reached Vietnam on July 9 and were supposed to fly back to India on Sunday morning," he said. Describing the moment of the accident, he added, "The incident happened around 1:30 PM local time. The boat had moved only 300 to 400 meters when it flipped.

Survival and the Cause of the Accident

Nirmal Kumar, a resident of Palani in Tamil Nadu, is one of the survivors who lived to tell the tale. He recounted that the speedboat they were traveling in capsized within a matter of seconds, while preliminary reports suggest that the accident might have been caused by strong waves and the possibility that the boat was carrying passengers beyond its designated capacity. Most of the tourists on the boat were from Tamil Nadu, while following the rescue, two individuals were reported to be in critical condition and were admitted to a local hospital for intensive care.

Official Statement from Lava Mobiles

Lava Mobiles issued a formal statement expressing deep grief over the loss of their partners and staff. The company stated, "At Lava, we're deeply saddened to inform you that 14 of our channel partners and one member of our Lava team tragically lost their lives in a boat accident near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam today. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones. " The company further confirmed that they're in constant contact with the Indian Embassy in Vietnam and local authorities to ensure the bodies are repatriated to India as quickly as possible. Their immediate priority remains supporting the affected families through their teams in both India and Vietnam.

Government Response and Victim Identification

The Indian Embassy in Hanoi has been actively monitoring the situation, while according to the embassy, the 15 deceased include 10 individuals from Tamil Nadu, 3 from Andhra Pradesh, and 2 from Kerala. The state governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala have announced that they're working closely with the Central Government to facilitate the return of the mortal remains to their respective home states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu have expressed their deep condolences over the tragedy. Various state Chief Ministers have also issued statements of grief and assured the victims' families of all possible assistance during this difficult time.
